Dog Allergies: Symptoms, Causes, Diagnosis & Treatment

Symptoms: what you might see at home (and why it’s rarely just one sign)

The big three

  • Itching (pruritus): scratching, licking, chewing, paw-licking

  • Red, inflamed skin, sometimes with hair loss

1) Flea allergy dermatitis: the “out of proportion” itch

Step 1: A history that’s more detailed than it sounds

  • Age of onset

Step 4: Environmental allergy testing is usually for treatment planning

For environmental allergies, vets may use:

  • Intradermal skin testing

  • Serum allergen-specific IgE testing


These tests are often most useful when considering allergen-specific immunotherapy (ASIT)—a longer-term strategy sometimes described as “disease-modifying” rather than purely symptom suppressing.


One important nuance from dermatology literature: tests can show sensitization, and sensitization doesn’t always map perfectly to “the thing that truly triggers symptoms in real life.” That’s not a scam; it’s immunology being messy.


Treatment options: what “management” usually means (and why it’s not the same as “giving up”)

1) Reduce exposure where you realistically can
